False Claims of Pyramid Collapse Circulate on Social Media

Social media users circulated a picture whose publishers claimed it showed the collapse of stones from one of the pyramids in Egypt.

The picture shows a young man standing in front of what appears to be the foot of a pyramid, with scattered stones and a support column behind him. The accompanying commentary stated, “The pyramid falls from us stone by stone.”

However, the three most famous pyramids in Giza, Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, have not suffered any collapse or cracks for many years, according to what experts confirmed to AFP.

As for the circulated image, it shows a support for the pyramid of Senefru in the Dahshur region, after part of it collapsed in 2009.

The photo received hundreds of posts on several pages on social media, and sparked hundreds of disapproving comments, given that the pyramid shown in the photo is one of the most famous pyramids in Giza (Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure).

However, a number of commentators pointed out that the pyramid shown in the picture is the pyramid of Senefru.

Indeed, the pillar itself appears in several photos published years ago on the Internet, including a photo distributed by Agence France-Presse in 2022.

The accompanying caption stated that the image shows support columns in the “bent pyramid” that was built during the reign of King Senefru in the twenty-seventh century BC in Dahshur, in the Giza region, south of Cairo.

Has there been a recent collapse of this pyramid?

The director of antiquities in the Dahshur region, Yasmine Hassan Aladdin, denies that any stones from the pyramid have recently fallen. “This is the shape of the pyramid of Snefru since 2009, and it has not changed until today,” she said in an interview with the news investigation service at Agence France-Presse.

Yasmine Aladdin explains that the restoration equipment shown in the circulating photo was put in place about ten years ago.

According to Issa Zaidan, Director of Restoration and Transfer of Antiquities at the Grand Egyptian Museum, what appears in the picture is protecting the pyramid of Senefru by scientific methods and under the supervision of experts.

“The restoration work that the pyramid undergoes on a regular basis has kept it safe,” he told AFP.

Magdy Shaker, the chief archaeologist at the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, agrees with what his colleagues said, explaining to AFP that the restoration equipment shown in the photo was put in place in 2014 and “contributed to protecting the pyramid, and the evidence is that no parts of Snefru fell since then.”

And he ends his speech by saying, “Whoever believes that the pyramid of Snefru is collapsing stone by stone must go himself to visit the pyramid in the Dahshur area of the Giza governorate.”

Were the other pyramids collapsed?

Director of Restoration and Transfer of Antiquities at the Grand Egyptian Museum, Issa Zidan, denies that the famous three pyramids of Giza (Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure) collapsed.

“The pyramids have not been subjected to any collapse or cracks at all for many years, and there are special restoration teams in the region that periodically make sure of their safety,” he told AFP.
