Social media users circulated an image that its publishers said showed a new fifty-pound banknote (about $1.6) that was put into circulation in Egypt.
The picture shows a hand holding a fifty Egyptian pound banknote bearing a drawing of a Pharaonic statue.
The publishers said that it was a new paper put forward for circulation in Egypt.
But the claim is wrong and the shape of the banknote in circulation is merely an artistic design published years ago.
What is its truth?
Searching for the image, via the Yandex engine, leads to a report published on the information checking platform “De Jad” in 2018 denying the issuance of some banknotes similar to the recently circulated one, and indicating that its source is a Facebook page.
A snapshot of the circulating image
In light of this, searching on this page makes it possible to find the same design that was circulated by misleading publications published on December 13, 2016.
The page is called the Egyptian Coin Design Challenge, and it invites designers to participate with their work.
After the image of this note spread on social media sites as being real, sources at the Central Bank of Egypt denied to local media that any similar note had been issued.
The source stated, “The Central Bank has not yet announced the offering of any new currencies after offering 10 pounds more than a year ago, and 20 pounds a few months ago.”
