This Friday around 10 a.m., “a false ceiling plate came loose in a CM2 classroom at the Eugène-Pottier elementary school, Hôpitaux-Facultés district” indicates the City of Montpellier in a press release. Immediately, the students, their teacher and the support person for students with disabilities (AESH) left the class. Two slightly injured children were examined on site by emergency services.then entrusted to their parents”. As a precaution, the AESH was conducted at the Montpellier University Hospital.
The emergency services checked all the false ceilings in the school and two classrooms and the canteen were closed preventively “in order to carry out additional verifications”. The students concerned were transferred to other rooms for the afternoon and replacement meals were distributed on site this lunchtime. A psychological unit was set up to “students, parents and the educational team”.
Inspections and work during school holidays
Of the “necessary work to reinforce the ceiling structure will be carried out during the school holidays” which start this Friday evening, “so as to allow a resumption of teaching from the start of the school year, scheduled for February 26”. During these holidays, “schools with a structure similar to that of the Pottier school” will also be checked.
Fanny Dombre Coste, first deputy mayor of Montpellier responsible for academic success, and Catherine Côme, departmental academic director (DASEN), went to the site and greeted “the responsiveness of the educational community, the teaching team and the agents who demonstrated efficiency and composure”.
The last security visit to the Eugène-Pottier school “is recent since it was carried out on October 5, 2023”. The reason why this plate came off is not yet determined.
