False Attack Alerts in Hyères: 16-Year-Old Arrested for Identity Theft and More

A few days ago, the Hyères town hall received several false attack alerts by email. The targeted locations had to be confined.

Last Wednesday, twelve sites in the city of Hyères (Var) had been targeted by attack alerts. These alerts came from several emails received by the town hall. A 16-year-old minor was taken into custody.

Three offenses retained

The Toulon public prosecutor’s office indicates that a judicial investigation has been opened against him for three offenses: false alarms, death threats against people charged with public service missions and identity theft.

In these false alerts, there were comments that were threatening towards several people [et] a portion of these false alerts were sent with the identity of another person.

The teenager, who lives with his grandmother, was indicted and placed under judicial supervision. It is followed by the judicial protection of youth.

Several prohibitions to respect

Among his obligations, the minor must submit to care and “is prohibited from approaching educational establishments, except those where he attends school“, continues the public prosecutor.

He is also prohibited from frequenting places where he can have access to the Internet. Because “he went to a [de ces lieux] where there were computers accessible to the public [pour] send some of these false alerts“, specifies Samuel Finielz.

His grandmother’s computer equipment was also seized.

Who was targeted by these attack alerts?

The town hall, the Park hotel and the media library were mentioned in the teenager’s emails. These threats led to the confinement of these places during the verifications.

These false alerts were sent in a context of terrorist threats taken very seriously. In the space of a week, this was the fourth time that such alerts targeted places in Hyères, after the airport and schools.
