The Langenprozelten triathlete Jonas Kreckel almost reached his goal of being in the top 40 of the German championships in the elite sprint on Saturday. But in the final count he was six seconds behind Jannik Hoffmann (triathlon team KSV Baunatal).

In 55:19 minutes after swimming 750 meters, cycling 20 kilometers and running 5 kilometers in Dusseldorf, Kreckel was 41st in a fast field that Lasse Priester (Hylo-Team Saar) dominated in a strong 50:58 minutes. Shortly after Kreckel, Silas Schmitt from Goldbach crossed the finish line in 55:20 in 42nd place. He had hoped for a little more and probably would have achieved more. But once again he was unlucky on the bike course, where he was involved in a crash through no fault of his own.

He was “super satisfied” because he swam very well and came out of the water 18th, Schmitt said in a voice message. He was in the second group on the bike when he fell. “I didn’t have a chance, it happened so quickly.” The fall not only cost him a lot of time, it also caused pain in his shin. “But I knew that I had to finish. Our fifth man also fell and was eliminated.« He then finished the race with »by hook or by crook« but the running time wasn’t as good as usual. »I can say for myself, for my performance: That was okay! I fought my way through and didn’t give up in my head.« Schmitt was also happy to have secured third place for his team Sportunion Neckarsulm in the ranking of the 1st Triathlon Bundesliga – Düsseldorf was also the third station of the season.

In the end just flat

The team result for Kreckel with SV Würzburg 05 was a bit disappointing: only 15th place out of 16 teams. The man from Langenprozelten did well at the swim start, the first 150 meters went “really well”. But at the first buoy he was “pretty devious and pushed under the water.” As a result, he fell back relatively far and came out of the water roughly in the middle of the field. It was relaxed on the bike. But while running, he still felt the exertion in his legs from the relay race the night before. “There wasn’t much left.” Nevertheless, he was satisfied: “It just wasn’t possible anymore.”

Victory in the men’s Bundesliga race clearly went to the Hylo-Team Saar, which placed three of its starters in the top five of the classification.

On Friday evening, Schmitt and Kreckel had already been in action for their Bundesliga teams and had done well in the 2×2 relay triathlon (mixed relay). As a starter, Kreckel was the sixth fastest of the first 16 starters from Würzburg; Schmitt, also first in the race for Sportunion Neckarsulm, was listed as the eighth fastest. Kreckel was very happy with his swimming performance, but left a lot of power on the bike, which he then lacked when running.

The two men and two women per team had to swim 250 meters, cycle 6.4 kilometers and run 1.5 kilometers. Kreckel needed 19:38 minutes and his Würzburg team 1:23:55 hours, which brought them sixth place. Silas Schmitt handed over after 19:44. The fact that Neckarsulm finished fifth ahead of Würzburg in 1:22:38 hours was mainly due to Simon Henseleit’s best time of the day of 18:11. The best team was Ejot Buschhütten in 1:18:06 hours, making it the German Mixed Relay Champion.
