Fall in temporary employment in the second quarter

With the expiration of the partial unemployment measures, 20,000 temporary jobs are threatened, warned the Swissstaffing umbrella.

The temporary employment sector saw a drop in activity in the second quarter, due to the coronavirus pandemic. With the expiration of partial unemployment measures, 20,000 temporary jobs are threatened, the Swissstaffing umbrella organization warned on Wednesday.

Between April and the end of June, the number of hours worked fell by almost 23% over one year, after a drop of 6.0% in the first partial and a drop of 5.5% in the last quarter of 2019, detailed the federation in a press release.

French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino were particularly affected, with a drop from 80% to 90% in the number of temporary workers in these regions during confinement. It has only fallen by 40% in the German-speaking part of the country.

“A large part of this decrease is not due to layoffs, but on the one hand to the expiration of fixed-term contracts and on the other hand to the lack of recruitments”, explained Swissstaffing, adding however that ‘a “slightly faster” recovery seems to be taking shape in Romandie and Ticino.

The federation is however worried, stressing that 20,000 temporary workers are currently on partial unemployment.

After the expiry of the Federal Council’s emergency ordinance on August 31, “the sector will no longer have this measure in favor of the labor market. If the workers concerned cannot return to work by then, they risk having their contract terminated, ”warned the federation.

According to its president Leif Agnéus, “the absence of a transitional solution for partial unemployment of temporary workers threatens a large number of temporary work reports for the beginning of September”.
