Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, a highly entertaining, accessible game with a competitive heart | Technology

Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout was played for several hours on Playstation 4 on its own.

He had been playing for hours. I lost and lost, but I reached the last stage. He had outgunned about 50 other opponents; people who were looking for the same goal as me in different parts of the world. It was the final. He had to climb a mountain, full of obstacles, carefully, and touch the floating crown. The first to do so was the winner and would be the best in that game. I reached the top, I was only inches from touching the crown. And I failed. I failed spectacularly. I fell and saw how another was the one who boasted of champion.

And he was fine, he had a great time and he was ready to do it again.

That’s Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout. The last game of fashion on Playstation 4 and PC, which is a breeze of new, fresh air, in the Battle Royale trend: this type of game where more than 50 players compete and there may be only one winner.

Fall Guys, ¿Otro Battle Royale?

The difference of Fall Guys with the rest is that it is a game that is not taken seriously. It is, from where you look at it, almost a parody of the Battle Royale; from the colors, to the competitors, the way they move, the music. It is all an entertaining humor. But at the center, at the heart, there is real competition to be the best.

Fall Guys does not require marksmanship skills, it does not require years of video game experience. Nor does it require you to know how to customize a character, how to make it better. Nothing. It does not demand anything of you. It only asks you to press X to start the game that, in seconds, begins with a maximum of 60 players from different parts of the world.

Anyone can play Fall Guys, but not everyone can win. And that is its magic. The simplicity of turning on the game and being in a game in seconds, winning or losing, and starting others in seconds again. There are no penalties if you fail to win. This is just entertainment.

And what do you do in these games? Very simple. Fall Guys consists of passing stages. Mini games so to speak (of which there are about 10 so far). With one button you jump, with another you throw “pikemen” and with another you can grab things. Including your rivals.

You start with a first minigame against 50 other and somewhat competitors just like you. You must win that minigame to move on to the next one. The challenge? Only the first 42 pass (reference number, it changes depending on the number of players). The rest are eliminated.

Once you move on to the next minigame, the same thing happens. Only the best will pass, others will be eliminated. This will continue until a final minigame where only one will win.

If you win? Very good for you, you achieved something very difficult and you will be awarded a crown and points that you can exchange for objects that will help you customize your character.

If you lose? Nothing happens. You still earn points and almost immediately you can start all over again to try to win.

This element, added to the fact that the games are not extended, make Fall Guys the perfect casual game. You arrive, you can play for half an hour and then you can move on to something else in your life. It does not demand more attention from you. You don’t need to spend hours in the game to advance (although due to its addictive nature, you probably will).

Meanwhile, all the points you get at the end of the games can be exchanged for different types of clothes, new celebration animations, different skin colors, among others. But beware, nothing you buy will make you better than your rivals. Fall Guys only measures skill and a little luck.

The set also includes microtransacciones, of which I’m not a fan, but it doesn’t challenge you or try to persuade you to spend real money on the game. It is very well implemented.

Mediatonic, the developer behind Fall Guys, he has nailed it by creating a video game that is so entertaining but so simple at the same time. It’s the closest we’ve ever had to a Mario Party online, but on PS4 and PC and with many more simultaneous players.

For the same, this game brings out its best moments when we enjoy it as a family, with friends online, since every moment is an opportunity to laugh at the funny falls, accidents, evil rivals who try to make you lose, among other golden moments that this title offers.

Verdict

Fall Guys is a simple, accessible, highly entertaining game with a competitive heart. It comes at a perfect time to enjoy during this pandemic; with family or friends online. Laughter, frustrations, celebrations and disappointments are what this title offers the most that it never punishes you for losing. On the contrary, it invites you to keep trying without demanding too much time. For its price on PC, we highly recommend it, while for PS4 it is perhaps better to wait a bit for it to drop (it is close to $ 20). However, if you have Playstation Plus, don’t miss the chance to add it to your library this month. Recommended!
