Falkensee: digital first aid for seniors

Not every elderly person has children or grandchildren around to help them find their way in the digital world. “Unfortunately, the prerequisites for the participation of older people in our digital society are still not met everywhere,” says Michael Lauber from the Falkensee Seniors’ Advisory Board. That is why the advisory board wants to be active in the matter.

Use technology to maintain contacts

The corona-related isolation of many senior citizens makes the situation even clearer. Many older people who were unable to maintain personal contacts at home or in care institutions for weeks or even months often also had no opportunity to exchange at least something with loved ones and theirs instead via digital media such as WhatsApp, Zoom or e-mail To mitigate isolation with it. The same also applies to many relatives who were unable to personally access their older relatives.

Seniors’ Advisory Board plans support

Changing this and at the same time making the use of digital technology more familiar to the older Falkensee is the aim of the “Older people and digitization” project that the Falkensee Senior Advisory Council is planning. With this, he wants to support older citizens individually in dealing with digital media. Support should be offered in facilities where senior citizens spend their free time. Help should be offered for initial use in the event of problems with various media such as PCs, tablets or smart phones. “Seniors can contact us if they are interested,” says Michael Lauber. We are still looking for sponsors to support the project. “We are looking for support from people of all age groups who are well versed in digital media and who want to pass on their knowledge to older people,” says 66-year-old Michael Lauber. Due to the pandemic, there is still no start date when the digital helpers can meet the seniors. But the senior citizens’ council is preparing the project.
