Fake Warnings by a Berlin Lawyer: A Warning from the German Protection Association against Economic Crime

This lawyer actually exists, but he is not the sender of the warnings. The digital letter refers to an alleged previous warning about copyright infringement through the illegal downloading of a protected film from the Internet. The recipients are asked to verify themselves at a specified URL address in order to then receive the necessary payment information “to avoid further legal action”, stating a deadline. The DSW expressly warns against clicking on this link.

So far, according to the association, it is not apparent that this e-mail was preceded by a warning or other correspondence. Rather, the demand appears as an attempt to get money out of the addressee’s pocket without great effort. In the view of the protection association, the e-mail represents a special form of phishing – dressed up in a letter from a lawyer in order to pretend a particular urgency to pay to those affected.

In order to check the origin of the warnings and to file your own criminal complaint, the protection association asks you to send the corresponding e-mails with the corresponding extended header (complete header). In this context, the DSW asks those affected to take a separate screenshot of the extended e-mail header and attach it to the e-mail.
