On Friday (August 11), US investigators arrested a 61-year-old suspect in Florida. He is said to have already operated on a pregnant Chihuahua bitch in May, which died – he is said to have falsely pretended to be a veterinarian.

Florida – Investigators were alerted after a six-year-old Chihuahua named “Sugar” died following an illegal surgery performed by Sanchez on May 18. As reported by the police in Collier County, Florida, the fake doctor Osvaldo Sanchez (61) no veterinary license and was not allowed to examine animals, order medication or even operate on them.

Fake doctor operates and collects

After the dog had problems delivering her puppies, Sugar’s owners alerted the supposed vet. These difficulties are not uncommon in Chihuahuas, as this type of dog has been bred so small over time that the puppies’ heads often cannot fit through the birth canal.

After Sanchez examined the Chihuahua at her owners’ home, he performed the surgery in his mobile practice on May 18th. For caesarean section and castration the wrong vet calculated an incredible 600 US dollars (about 550 euros). A week later she was dead.

Infection resulted in death

As doctors at a veterinary clinic found out after an ultrasound examination, the fake doctor had used a commercially available thread to close the wound instead of sterile material. A grossly negligent behavior that the bitch paid with her life.

Sheriff Kevin Rambosk praised investigators for their diligence leading to the arrest. He urged the public to educate themselves and only entrust their pet to a licensed veterinarian. “Pets’ lives are at risk when unauthorized people perform surgeries, prescribe medication and claim to provide necessary care,” Sheriff Rambosk said.

Now Sanchez will be held accountable. What the verdict will look like is currently unknown. In the United States, animal abuse and animal cruelty can carry a prison sentence of up to seven years.
