Interview Krefeld Director and actor Bruno Winzen edited Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “The Emperor’s New Clothes” for the stage. The premiere is on Saturday, October 30th.
Autumn and winter are traditionally the seasons for fairy tales at the community theater. A new Christmas fairy tale is therefore on the program every season of the Krefeld and Mönchenglabdahc Theater from October or November. Director and actor Bruno Winzen has now edited Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Emperor’s New Clothes” for the stage.

Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale is over 150 years old. Why do you think it’s important to still get it on stage today?

Bruno Winzen: Because vanity, overconfidence, insincerity, mendacity and intrigue still occur in high-ranking personalities today, and this is told in a great and funny way in this fairy tale. I also like the happy ending, because you should never give up hope and belief in the good in people.

As in the “Sängerkrieg der Heidehasen”, you work with the musician Julia Klomfaß, who accompanies every performance live as a “one-woman orchestra”. What do you find particularly exciting about it?

Winzen: Julia is always present at the rehearsals, which is not necessarily common for a theater musician, and can therefore compose music precisely for the way we tell the story. Because she is always on stage, she sees everything that is being played and, like a noisemaker, can spontaneously add sounds and tones, sometimes like in a cartoon. That enriches the staging a lot.
