Fair burden sharing: Erdogan calls for refugee deal

The EU refugee pact with Turkey must probably be renegotiated. At least the Turkish side seems to be pushing for this. President Erdogan made corresponding demands in a telephone call with Chancellor Merkel.

In a telephone call with Chancellor Angela Merkel, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for fair burden sharing on the subject of refugees. Erdogan has pointed out that the burden of the refugees and the responsibility for them is shared fairly and that international obligations must be met, said a statement from the Turkish side.

Erdogan had previously openly threatened the EU with a new mass of refugees. Since Erdogan announced on Saturday that Turkey has opened its borders to the EU, thousands of migrants have made their way to the Greek border, where they are now staying on the Turkish side in cold weather. Greek security forces repeatedly used stun grenades and tear gas to push people back. Turkey has taken in around 3.6 million refugees in neighboring Syria since the beginning of the civil war.

Allegations to Greece and the EU

Erdogan accused Greek security forces of killing two migrants and injuring one. He said this, according to the Turkish state news agency Anadolu after meeting with Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borissow in Ankara. Erdogan also accused the EU of not fully meeting the requirements of the refugee pact of 2016.

In the agreement with the EU, Turkey had actually agreed to tackle illegal migration. In return, the EU regularly accepts Syrians from Turkey. Ankara also receives financial support for the care of refugees in the country.
