According to NRK, the Norwegian Patient Injury Compensation (NPE) states that there was a failure in the treatment of the alpinist and Olympic winner Finn Christian Jagge, who died at the age of 54.

Norwegian Patient Injury Compensation (NPE) believes Jagge died as a result of failure in treatment at Ullevål hospital on July 8, 2020, writes NRK.

Tom Sørum is a lawyer for Jagge’s wife, Trine-Lise Jagge, and their two children.

– It is of course very unfortunate that something like this happens. At the same time, the relatives had a feeling that there was something wrong with the treatment, and when it first happens, it is a relief that you can confirm it and get a basis for compensation, Sørum says to VG.

The lawyer states that there will now be further proceedings against NPE to clarify the claim for compensation.

The former alpinist died on July 8 after an acute illness. Jagge turned 54 years old.

Jagge had to undergo several operations and several rounds of antibiotic treatment, but was discharged on June 26, 2020.

Five days later, he was readmitted after feeling unwell and having abdominal pain.

NRK writes that according to Oslo University Hospital’s guidelines, antibiotic treatment should have been started within an hour, while NPE states that this was not done in accordance with good medical practice.

“We also believe that it was probable that the patient had an infectious condition with the same type of bacterium as before, and that the same combination of antibiotics that had an effect at the first admission should therefore have been given immediately. This combination of antibiotics was only given over 24 hours later “, writes NPE.

Antibiotic treatment was only started eleven hours after admission, and NPE states that the death would most likely have been avoided if the patient had received effective antibiotic treatment shortly after the second admission, according to NRK.

– This is a sad case where we turn all stones to look for things we should have done differently, writes clinic manager at Oslo University Hospital, Morten Tandberg Eriksen, in an e-mail to the channel.

Jagge was one of the world’s best alpinists for a number of years, and was a big part of the start of Norway’s alpine adventure. The big highlight of his career came in 1992 when he won Olympic gold in downhill skiing in Albertville.

Finn Christian Jagge stayed active after he put the slalom skis on the shelf, and in 2011 he left all the way to the top in «Mesternes mester» on NRK.

Four years earlier he participated in “Shall we dance” along with dance partner Therese Cleve.
