The first inclusive park in the municipality of Guimarães was inaugurated this Saturday, October 24, in Vila de Ponte, the municipality announced. Despite the inauguration, it will be closed indefinitely in the face of the covid-19 pandemic.

The work was carried out by the Junta de Freguesia de Ponte, with the support of the Municipality of Guimarães, including leisure equipment, fitness, urban furniture, access ramps for people with reduced mobility and suitable for the blind, parking, as well as spaces landscaped.

The Mayor of Guimarães, Domingos Bragança, highlighted the “example of a complete project to serve all citizens” and with reference to environmental concerns ”.

“We are facing a well-achieved and reference work, both in the social dimension by providing the necessary conditions for children and adults with reduced mobility, as well as in the area of ​​sustainability with the creation of furniture from recyclable materials”, he said.

For Domingos Bragança, through this project, Guimarães reinforces the status of “Child Friendly City”, through UNICEF recognition, which highlights the commitment and active involvement in promoting and defending the rights of the child and improving the situation of children in the territory .

The President of the Junta de Ponte, Sérgio Castro Rocha, pointed out the realization of “a project that we had been aiming for years”.

The mayor explained that “the land was already owned by the Junta de Freguesia, with around 1500 m2, and we wanted to achieve something with everyone in mind: adults and children with reduced mobility”.

Sérgio Castro Rocha underlined the support of the Mayor and stressed the attention taken in the area of ​​environmental sustainability. “These equipments are supported with lighting produced by photovoltaic panels, because environmental issues have also always been present, since the placement of ecopoints, urban equipment produced by recyclable materials and the plants that came from Horto de Ponte”, he said.

The space for charging equipment for electric vehicles is also created.

The inauguration of the Inclusive Bridge Park took place this Saturday, associated with the celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations (UN), within the scope of the Sustainable Development goals for 2030 under the mission of “providing universal access to green spaces and safe publics, inclusive and accessible, especially for women and children, the elderly and the disabled ”

The equipment of the Children’s Park and Fitness Park are still closed, within the scope of the restriction measures due to the pandemic and, for now, only the car park can be used.
