Fafe declares a state of emergency due to the “speed” of virus spread – Executive Digest

The municipality of Fafe is in a state of municipal emergency due to the “great evolution” in the number of people infected with the new coronavirus and the “speed” of the spread, announced the Mayor.

In a video published on the social networks of that municipality in the district of Braga, the mayor Raul Cunha said that the municipality has seen an increase of 195 cases in the last seven days, now rising to 567 the number of cases accumulated since the beginning of the pandemic.

According to Raul Cunha, Fafe is in 20th place in the list of municipalities in the North region with the highest rate of progression of covid-19.

“We have never had, since the beginning of the pandemic, a situation like the one we are experiencing”, he stressed.

On Wednesday, the Municipal Civil Protection Commission met and decided to declare the municipal state of emergency.

As a result of this new reality, the municipality’s cemeteries will no longer open on the weekend and on Monday, contrary to what was initially planned.

Raul Cunha said that it is necessary to prevent the crowding of people, considering that this has been the main contagion factor.

Therefore, he added, there will be an increase in police enforcement on the streets.

From now on, the Municipal Civil Protection Commission will begin to be in “permanent contact” to assess the evolution of the situation and to take, “with tranquility and rigor, the measures that may prove necessary”.

“Without any alarmism, but with prudence”, he stressed.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 1.1 million deaths and more than 44 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.

In Portugal, 2,395 people died from 128,392 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
