Jakarta –
Digaet this summer, Facundo Pellistri became the newest Uruguay player in Manchester United. Who was it before? How successful are they?
Refers to TransferMarkt data, striker Diego Forlan is the first Uruguayan player to defend the Red Devils. He was recruited from Independiente on January 20, 2002 and at Man United until August 21, 2004.
A total of 98 appearances were recorded by Forlan during his time at MU, with 17 goals scored. His persistence on the field was enough to win over the support of the supporters, but some of his failures in netting the ball from mature opportunities remain in the spotlight.
Diego Forlan left Manchester United after being in the squad that won the 2002/2003 Premier League, 2003/2004 FA Cup and Community Shield: 2003. Red Devils fans still remember him as the scorer of two goals against Liverpool.
Full back Guillermo Varela became the second player from Uruguay recruited by Manchester United. Carrying off from Penarol, he signed a five-year contract with Man United in June 2013.
Early in his career at Manchester United starting with the U-23 team, before going on loan to Real Madrid Castilla. He just debuted for Man United’s first team on December 5, 2015 when he came on as a substitute.
When Jose Mourinho arrived at Old Trafford as manager in 2016, Guillermo Varela was left out of the pre-season tour of China. He was loaned to Eintracht Frankfurt in July 2016, before finally returning to Penarol in 2017.
After the two Uruguay players at different periods, this summer Manchester United brought in two players from that country. One of them is the young winger Facundo Pellistri.
Like Varela, Facundo Pellistri imported by the Red Devils from Penarol. Not much is known about the winger’s abilities with the exception of his video compilation clips and comments from a number of former footballers.
One thing that is interesting, Pellistri was trained by Forlan in Penarol. That gave rise to rumors that his move to Manchester United this summer could not be separated from Diego Forlan’s participation.
Apart from that, of course, there are names Edinson Cavani, which can be said to be a contrast to Pellistri. Cavani, at 33 years old, is no longer young. On the other hand, he has a reputation as an accomplished footballer in front of goal while defending Palermo, Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain.
Whether Edinson Cavani still has a spur, after only being trusted to appear 22 times with seven goals for Paris Saint-Germain over the past season, is debatable. But Manchester United it is said that he hoped his arrival would have the same effect as Zlatan Ibrahimovic who was the elder of taro; is still good at scoring goals even though he is not young anymore, and in particular acts as a leader and inspiration on the pitch.
