Researchers from the United States analyzed data from more than 200 patients, examining the relationship between blood levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and deaths in patients with COVID-19. Experts have come to the conclusion that a sufficient level of this vitamin in the body can prevent a severe course of infection and the risk of death as a result of the disease. PLOS ONE.
– With normal vitamin D levels, there was a significant decrease in serum C-reactive protein, a key biomarker of systemic inflammation. At the same time, an increase in the content of lymphocytes was noted. This suggests that the vitamin contributes to the desired immune response and reduces the risk of complications from the disease. This is probably due to a decrease in the risk of developing a dangerous cytokine storm in response to a viral infection, the researchers noted.
Recall that a cytokine storm is often recorded in patients with severe COVID-19. The condition is associated with uncontrolled inflammation, which causes damage to the body’s own tissues.
Thus, the experts concluded that sufficient vitamin D levels are a factor that reduces the risk of death from coronavirus infection. It is noted that taking a vitamin must be agreed with a doctor.
