Factor that 6 times increases the risk of death from coronavirus

Consecutive illness, first with the flu and then with the coronavirus, increases the patient’s risk of death sixfold. This conclusion was reached by British scientists from the University of Liverpool, according to the resource bioRxiv.

It is noted that the experiment was carried out on two groups of mice. The first group was infected with coronavirus, the second alternately with influenza and coronavirus. As a result, the disease was much more severe in the representatives of the second group of mice. “Although SARS-CoV-2 RNA synthesis was significantly reduced in sequentially infected mice, these mice had more rapid weight loss, more severe lung damage, and a prolonged innate response compared to single-infected or control mice,” the report says. One of the study’s authors, James Stewart, believes that the same rule applies to humans.

It is noted that in the second group of mice, mortality from the disease was 6 times higher than in the first group. This is caused by the competition of two viruses in the same organism, which increases the negative effect on health.
