Fact Check: Can Drinking Tea Damage Your Kidneys? Expert Explains the Truth

Jakarta

Tea is a drink that many people like. Not infrequently people always drink tea in the morning and evening. However, there is an opinion that drinking tea too often can damage the kidneys. Is that true?

Chairman of the Indonesian Nephrology Association (PERNEFRI) Dr. Pringgodigdo Nugroho, SpPD-KGH, emphasized that this is a myth. So far, there have been no studies that show drinking tea can damage the kidneys.

“This is a myth. There have been no studies showing that this tea is prohibited because it can damage the kidneys. So it is still allowed,” he explained at the Ministry of Health’s press conference, Thursday (13/3/2024).

Even so, the ideal thing to consume regularly, including for patients with kidney disease, is water. Dr Pringgodigdo explained that it is recommended to drink enough water for 24 hours.

Adequate water intake can be adjusted to each person’s age and activities. This needs to be sufficient so as not to damage kidney function and the production of urine or liquid waste excreted by the body.

“For healthy adults, it is recommended to drink 2-2.5 liters up to a maximum of 3 liters which must be fulfilled within 24 hours,” explained Dr. Pringgodigdo.

“Because the kidneys work 24 hours a day, so water needs must be sufficient for those 24 hours and must also be met properly,” he concluded.
