Hermann, born in Munich as Irmgard Hermann, initially worked as a secretary in her hometown. There she met a person in 1966 who was to lead her into a new professional career: Rainer Werner Fassbinder.

The same year she starred in the director’s short film “Der Stadtstreicher”. With Fassbinder and the actress Hanna Schygulla, she founded the “Action Theater”. In addition to the roles for Fassbinder, Hermann developed into a close confidante of the director.

Before moving to Berlin in 1975, she played numerous roles in Fassbinder films. Later she participated in Fassbinder’s “Berlin Alexanderplatz” and “Lili Marleen”.

Hermann played with numerous well-known directors. With Werner Herzog she shot “Woyzeck” next to Klaus Kinski, Hans W. Geissendörfer signed her for “Edith’s diary”, for Ulrike Ottinger she was in front of the camera in “Johanna D’Arc of Mongolia”. With Christoph Schlingensief, she shot “The German Chainsaw Massacre” and “The 120 Days of Bottrop”.

Irm Hermann played alongside Elyas M’Barek
Hermann received the German Film Award for the role of Sophie Scholl’s fellow prisoners in Percy Adlon’s «Last Five Days». She was able to show her strange talent in Loriot’s “Pappa ante portas” or most recently three years ago alongside Elyas M’Barek, Jella Haase, Sandra Hüller and Katja Riemann in “Fack Ju Göhte 3”.

Hermann was also very successful on theater stages. So she played from 1979 to 1980 and then again from 1987 to 1991 at the Berlin Volksbühne. Between 1991 and 1993 she was part of the Berlin Ensemble. She was on stage for Schlingensief in the “Hamlet” as well as the imperial chancellor’s wife in the “Berlin Republic”. Under Christoph Marthaler she worked on the Volksbühne and in the Hamburg Schauspielhaus.

Hermann was married to the children’s book author Dietmar Roberg, with whom she has two sons. (sda)
