Facing the Omicron Variant in the Midst of the COVID-19 Pandemic: Get Tired but Don’t Give Up

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – We have lived for two years fighting against COVID-19 in Indonesia. Fatigue may have been present or may have disappeared and appeared in feelings for the past two years, but the struggle is not over in dealing with pandemic COVID-19 happening in this world.

“Yes, we can be tired but don’t give up,” said internal medicine specialist Ceva Wicaksono Pitoyo.

“If you are tired, we are all tired but let’s fight together,” said Ceva in an online discussion broadcast on the Ministry of Health’s YouTube entitled Omicron alert written Friday (4/3/2022).

Currently, the transmission of COVID-19 is still happening in the country. When transmission is still high, the potential for the virus to mutate to become more dangerous than Delta or even lighter can occur.

Strict health protocols must still be carried out, especially at this time when variants Omicron dominate the transmission of COVID-19 infection.

“On Omicron, the mutation is in the amino acid portion of this virus. The mutations that occur make the virus easier to attach to the cells of the human body,” said Ceva.

He likens the Omicron to an animal that has claws and teeth. The claws are sharper so it’s easy to jump and grip. However, the teeth are not sharp or the fangs are blunt so that when bitten it is not too deep.

“In Omicron, the percentage of deaths is indeed smaller, but the transmission is more virulent because it can be 5 times more easily transmitted than the previous variant,” explained Ceva.
