Facing Denmark: Regret, Disappointments, and Strategies for Victory

Do you regret not being able to chat with Cipro before the crucial match against Denmark and ask about a few details?

But we talked a little.

Seriously?

With my assistant Michal Horňák, who played under Mr. Cipro in Austria, we asked and went to the coach’s grave. It was a nice moment.

However, the goal from the 96th minute, which took away the victory over Wales (1:1) on Friday, was not pretty. You had a similar eclipse in September in Iceland, where you also conceded at the end and lost 1:2. What with this?

Not that these games are like a copycat, but the goal from Wales was stupid and pointless. The disappointment is huge so far. Our game in the first and second half was diametrically different. In the first half we dominated, in the second we let the opponent into several dangerous situations. Lesson learned? We have to be concentrated and, of course, of sufficient quality throughout the match.

Did you also work as a psychologist on the team during the weekend?

The time between matches is short in the qualifiers, so you have to try to keep the mood in the team good and the players mentally relaxed. We got it going in the first half with Wales and we all feel we have the quality to play for the top two places in the qualifying group.

How about that?

We have to convert the chances we created against Wales into more than just one goal. And we also have to make sure we don’t have the lapses at the end that brought us down in Iceland and against Wales. We need to beat Denmark and catch up with them in the table. I am convinced that we have what it takes.

What awaits you against an opponent who collected four points in two qualifying matches, or three more than you?

It will definitely be a different opponent than Wales. He dominates matches, relying on high possession and a 4-3-3 formation with good wing play and fair combination from the back. We are facing an opponent with a different style than in the match against Wales, where there were duels and defensive kicks. The Danes are superior in terms of individual quality and technique.

Which player did you draw attention to in particular?

Denmark has several personalities. For example, goalkeeper Jörgensen plays steadily for Villareal and has a very good effect on the team, including the organization of the defense. Other interesting players are in the midfield and many dangerous names can be found in the attacking phase as well. For example, the all-rounder Rasmussen from Nordsjaelland knows how to outsmart others. Most of the players regularly play in the Danish league, and even abroad, the Danes have several boys who are regularly busy in the clubs.

So an extra tough opponent?

Denmark has players who are strong on the ball and combine perfectly. Even in September against France, which is one of Europe’s top teams, they tried to play football and had chances. Despite the 1:4 defeat, the Danes performed very well. I think they won’t play kicking like Wales.

Are you clear about the lineup changes?

There may be a few of them, we will decide according to the condition of the players at pre-match training. We have one or two changes in mind that we prefer either way. We are also clear about the line-up, hopefully it will bring us success.
