Facilitating the exercise of the vote: public transport will be free during PASO 2023

In an effort to promote active participation in the PASO 2023it has been announced that the public transportation throughout the country it will be free during the entire electoral day, also the subway, premetro and the network of bicycle paths of the City of Buenos Aires. The measure was officially announced by the national Ministry of Transport, Diego Giuliano.

According to data provided by the agency THATIn the case of the CABA, the City’s bicycle system, known as “Ecobici”, will activate its Basic Plan, allowing users to make up to 4 trips of 30 minutes each for free, a scheme that normally applies from Monday to Friday. The operating hours of the subway and the Premetro will be brought forward to 7 in the morning, one hour earlier than usual, to facilitate the movement of voters.

The measures adopted will be in force for the PASO next Sunday August 13, the general elections on October 22 and, if necessary, the ballotage that could take place on November 19. With this initiative, the authorities seek to eliminate any barrier that may arise in the path of citizens to the polls, promoting active and broad participation in the electoral process.

This significant measure was recently ratified by the Ministry of Transportation of the province of Buenos Aires and the Secretary of Transportation and Public Works of the City of Buenos Aires, highlighting its importance to “guarantee the right to vote for all people” and to avoid obstacles in the process of expressing their will at the polls.

Public transport for everyone

The Minister of Transport of Buenos Aires, Jorge D’Onofrio, announced at the end of July that the frequency of Saturdays for public transport services will be maintained, with the request for adherence to this measure by all municipalities. In the case of trains, the Roca, Sarmiento, San Martín, Urquiza, Miter, Tren de la Costa, Belgrano Norte and Sur lines will operate with the same schedule during election day.

«Each neighbor and neighbor will be able to renew their commitment to democracy without the Sunday service being a barrier. With a profoundly democratic spirit, we are going to celebrate 40 years of the recovery of democracy by exercising the free right to vote,” D’Onofrio recounted under an official resolution of his ministry.

On the other hand, with regard to parking in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA), it will remain in its usual state and will continue to operate according to the Sunday scheme. It is emphasized that in places such as ramps, sidewalks, street corners, garages, bus stops, streets for coexistence and sectors intended for people with disabilities, as well as for clinics, hospitals and areas designated for loading and unloading, the regulations that prohibit parking will be in effect 24 hours a day.
