The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO, for its acronym in English) called on the Mexican population don’t panic shopping, in order to avoid food waste during the health emergency due to covid-19.

Through its hashtag on social networks #NoAlDesperdicio, the organization seeks to raise awareness among the population so that consume the necessary products and urge, in case of having an excess, to donate food to avoid discard them.

“Foods that are never eaten represent a waste of natural resources: water, soil, seeds and other inputs used in their production, which in vain increases greenhouse gas emissions, #NoAlWaste, ”they wrote on their Twitter account.

They argue that holidays like the one on December 24 and next New Year’s are a good time to appreciate food, and not “overeat”, so “during these holidays, do not waste food and help us reach a #ZeroHunger”.

Until 2011, FAO estimated that one third of the food produced was wasted worldwide, which is equivalent to thousand 300 tons per year. This implies the waste of resources such as seeds, water, land use, money and even labor.

In its document “Mitigating risks to food systems during covid-19: Reducing food loss and waste”, FAO recommends not to panic purchases, consume only what is necessary; properly store food to avoid waste, as well as donate sealed food and intact food to charities so that it can be redistributed.
