“Facebook” terminates its contract with “Telus” for moderation in the Bulgarian language

The company “Meta” is terminating its contract with “Telus” Bulgaria for content moderation on “Facebook” in Bulgarian, Turkish and Russian, the investigative site BIRD.bg reported on social networks.

“Meta terminated its contract with Telus Bulgaria and the moderation of Bulgarian, Russian and Turkish is transferred to Germany from July. Until then, the moderation is limited to pedophilia, terrorist content, calls for murder and suicide, but not to political figures. They have also been modified the algorithms”wrote from BIRD.bg.

In January, the investigative site revealed that a secret project of the company “Meta” under the name “Dolphin”, implemented by the Bulgarian division of “Telus International”, moderates the content of the social network Facebook in Bulgaria. According to BIRD.bg, the moderation is structured in a way that gives rise to suspicions of deliberate sanctioning of Bulgarian citizens and activists who advocate pro-Ukrainian positions and are critics of the Kremlin.

The topic of the moderation of Bulgarian on Facebook reached the last parliament before it was dissolved. In the Electoral Management Commission of the 48th National Assembly, a written statement was presented by “Meta”, and representatives of “Telus” were heard. Then “Meta” announced that they had conducted a special audit, but did not find any inconsistencies or violations in the moderation of Facebook in Bulgaria by “Telus”.

This comes after in recent months there have been controversies surrounding the Bulgarian moderation of Facebook due to the silencing of activists, journalists and members of the public who are critical of Russian aggression in Ukraine, while at the same time increasing pro-Russian propaganda. Last year, weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine, a petition was also sent to the European Parliament against biased content moderation in the Bulgarian segment of Facebook.
