Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) is developing a wrist device that converts motor signals from the brain into augmented reality navigation on a computer. According to a CNBC report, Facebook showed off a prototype in a virtual phone call with media representatives this week. The bracelet uses electromyography (EMG) to interpret the information sent from the brain to the hand. “Probably twice as many neurons are involved in controlling the wrist and moving the hands as controlling the mouth for eating and speaking,” said TR Reardon, director of research science at Facebook Reality Labs. Big tech companies are busy developing virtual and augmented reality products, and the competition is heating up. Announced last week Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) has plans to launch its mixed reality headset in 2022, a product that will compete with Facebook’s Oculus headset. The prototype that Facebook presented is a little different in that it would allow the user to write on a computer screen or scroll through images just by thinking about it. The idea resembles a product from Elon Musk’s startup Neuralink, which he claims allowed monkeys to play video games with their minds. Facebook is still in the early stages of development and does not expect the products to hit the market anytime soon. “How these things work in the market, when they show up – those are things that I have no clear answers to. What we’re focusing on is hardening these technologies, ”said Mike Schroepfer, Facebook’s chief technology officer.
