Facebook on Thursday night removed a group of about 365,000 members because unproven claims of fraud were spread during the US election. The group called on members to protest in several states.
The group ‘Stop the Steal’ is guilty of questioning the legitimacy of the election process, according to Facebook. “We also saw worrying calls for violence,” he said Facebook against American journalists.
The social media platform says there are “heightened tensions” at the moment. Therefore, the group has now been deleted.
The Republican activist group Women for America First is behind the page, which gathered more than 300,000 members in just a few days. American media sounded the alarm about the site when it emerged that unproven rumors of voting fraud were circulating.
Visitors were urged to also add their names to a list on a website, “in case the group was deleted”. The site would be owned by another Republican group, Liberty Lab, writes Rolling Stone.
US President Donald Trump has been tweeting without proof for days claims on the legitimacy of the elections and calls for the voting process to be stopped. Twitter has therefore decided to provide several of its tweets with a warning label.
