Facebook punished with 650 million dollars | Privacy infringed; Order to pay $ 650 million in damages against Facebook

SAN FRANCISCO: A federal court has awarded $ 650 million in damages to a privacy lawsuit against Facebook. Judge James Donato called the ruling “one of the greatest settlements of all time for privacy violations.”

The verdict came in a class-action lawsuit filed in Illinois in 2015 by U.S. District Judge James Donato. The case was filed alleging that photo face-tagging and other biometric data were used without the user’s permission.

Users need to obtain their consent before using facial recognition technology to digitally create and store users’ faces and to scan uploaded photos.

The ruling will benefit 1.6 million Facebook users in Illinois who have filed lawsuits for damages. Chicago attorney Jay Edelsson, who filed the lawsuit, said the checks would be in the mail within two months if the verdict is not appealed.
