Instagram plans to send 2FA codes over WhatsApp, according to fugitive and in-app analyst Alessandro Paluzzi. At the moment, Instagram only allows two-factor authentication through an authenticator app, text messages, login requests, and backup codes.
While this feature is still in development, the leaked one was able to show how it was going to work: users need to enable SMS authentication to switch to WhatsApp as a 2FA method.
Just as two-factor authentication works now, this feature will be optional and users can decide to never register or just use an authenticator app instead, which is much more secure.
With WhatsApp working to support multiple devices, it would be a great alternative to receive 2FA codes to connect to Instagram from the web, even if the user’s primary device is turned off.
Since it’s still in development, we don’t know when it will be available for iOS and Android users.
Currently, Instagram is also working on a redesigned web experience with the ability to post photos and videos through its website. As Alessandro Paluzzi also revealed, the update brings the post creator to the web version of Instagram – which was previously only available on Instagram’s mobile website in addition to the official app.
Paluzzi managed to activate the new option on his profile via undisclosed methods, and he shared a few images on Twitter of how Instagram’s post creator will perform on the web. The interface has been tweaked with a preview of the content alongside the post options. Users will also find options to crop the image, apply filters (the same as in the app), and set a description.
