“Facebook News” starts in Germany

Germany launch for “Facebook News”. With its new offer, the social media service wants to counteract “fake news” in this country as well.

“Fake news” are a well-known problem in the social media world of Facebook, Twitter and Co. Mark Zuckerberg’s group is now taking another step to counter false reports: “Facebook News” is also starting in Germany and collecting relevant news high quality media.

At the beginning, the focus should be on the classic news sections business, entertainment, health, science & technology and sport, as well as separate collections on current topics such as the coronavirus. Depending on which of the displayed messages the individual user reads, shares or comments, the algorithm calculates further content that will be displayed in the future.

The content of the new extra area comes from more than 100 media brands from 35 publishers, including the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”, the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” and the “Zeit”. But reports from local newspapers should also find their place on “Facebook News”. The content does not have to be specially produced for social media: Instead, Facebook pays its partners to post content in “Facebook News” that has not yet been found on the social media portal. So far, “Facebook News” was available in the US and UK.
