“Facebook Misled Parents and Failed to Protect Children’s Privacy on Messenger Kids, FTC Proposes Sweeping Changes in Privacy Order”

US regulators said Facebook misled parents and failed to protect the privacy of children using Messenger Kids, including misrepresenting the access it gave app developers to private user data.

As a result, the FTC proposed sweeping changes to its 2020 privacy order with Facebook that would prevent it from benefiting from the data it collects on users under the age of 18, including data collected through virtual reality products. According to the Associated Press.

The committee said that Facebook’s owner, Meta, had failed to fully comply with the 2020 privacy order. The company will also be subject to other restrictions, including its use of facial recognition technology, and will be required to provide additional privacy protections for its users.

“Facebook has repeatedly broken its promises on privacy,” said Samuel Levine, director of the Federal Trade Commission’s Office of Consumer Protection. “The company’s recklessness puts younger users at risk, and Facebook needs to respond to its own failures.”
