Facebook Messenger receives an Apple Music extension

Facebook has just announced many changes to Messenger, with the focus on new ways to integrate applications with it. And, while not yet available, one of the notable partners announced was Apple Music.

Near the end of his presentation at Facebook’s F8 conference this afternoon, David Marcus, head of Messenger, said: “I’m very excited to tell you that Apple Music will be on the platform soon.”

There were no more details than that, and Apple Music only received a “soon” tag, so there isn’t even a firm ETA on when it will be available. But Facebook and Apple have also worked together on music integrations (songs from Apple Music can be incorporated into the News Feed) so it’s not a huge surprise to see this partnership, even from Apple, usually on its own.

After its sound, the integration will allow people to browse Apple Music within Messenger, find a song and send it to their chat. Then everyone will be able to play the song without leaving Messenger, which is a huge advantage over how older Facebook integrations work, giving users separate apps. Of course, you will almost certainly need a subscription to hear a complete song.

For those who don’t want to wait, Spotify launches an extension that does all of this out of the box. Spotify started working on Messenger a little over a year ago, but it wasn’t a great experience because I had to go to Spotify to find and listen to a song.
