Facebook messages are now encrypted by default

From now on, end-to-end encryption is automatically enabled on Facebook and Messenger. This means that the messages are encrypted via a specific code that only the sender and recipient have. This also applies to voice calls via social media. It has been possible to enable this function on Facebook since 2016, but this was not the default setting.

“This means that no one, including Meta, can see what is sent or said unless you choose to send us a message,” Meta reports. The company says end-to-end encryption couldn’t become the default on Facebook earlier “because we took our time to get it right.”

The new features will be available immediately, but the company says it will take some time for chat messages in Messenger to be updated with standard end-to-end encryption. Users will be notified to set up a recovery method to recover their messages once the transition is complete.
