Facebook limits a number of Messenger and Instagram functions in Europe

MENLO PARK – A number of functions on Messenger and Instagram in Europe have been restricted by Facebook. This restriction is an attempt to make changes to comply with privacy regulations in the European Union.

With these restrictions, Facebook Messenger and Instagram users in Europe reportedly received a pop-up warning that appeared in the application as a form of notification. (Also read: Samsung prepares four foldable screen phones in 2021 )

“Some features are not available, this is to respect the new rules for messaging services in Europe. We are working to bring it back,” wrote the pop-up, quoted by XDA Developer, Monday (21/12/2020).

The Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive rules or the ePrivacy Directive for short, actually existed earlier this year. And as of December 21, 2020, these rules will come into effect for Messenger and Instagram. (Also read: Borong Existing, Sony Called Turn Off the PS4 Pro Immediately )

The ePrivacy Directive is a rule that prohibits the collection of message content and associated metadata, without the sender’s permission. In other words, it is not allowed to scan user messages to provide appropriate advertisements.

Both applications under Facebook can still be used to send messages. However, many interactive features have limited capabilities, such as creating polls or assigning a nickname to a user’s contact list.
