Facebook has been offering end-to-end encrypted chats for Messenger since 2016. But this service needs to be enabled for each individual chat session for users to stay informed, and keeping conversations secure is a bit of a hassle. Facebook will also make changes to some Messenger features to accommodate end-to-end encryption. Currently, encrypted messages are stored on the devices themselves.
With security in mind, Facebook has layers of security when restoring an encrypted chat, requiring users to enter a PIN or use a generated code to access its content. If users choose to backup encrypted chats, they can do so using the service of their choice. While the rollout will be gradual, Facebook says it will start soon and continue through 2023.
