Facebook has launched public beta testing of a new question-and-answer app called Hotline, as TechCrunch reported. Hotline is a Clubhouse and Instagram Live mashup.
The web app allows creators to speak to an audience who can then ask questions via text or audio. Unlike the Clubhouse, the host can remove inappropriate questions from the queue or remove people from their Hotline session.
For initial testing, TechCrunch says, “Facebook employees will moderate events and remove anyone who violates community standards, terms of service, Facebook’s data policy, or NPE Team Additional Terms. “
Facebook has been working on this project since at least February. In March, . reported on Facebook’s new “Live Audio” feature. This time around, although Hotline looks like the Clubhouse and Twitter spaces, it has video capabilities and a question-and-answer section, which feels more professional than just a casual hangout.
In a statement to TechCrunch, Facebook explained:
With Hotline, we hope to understand how live interactive multimedia Q&A can help people learn from experts in areas such as job skills, just as they help those experts grow their business. Experimenting with new products has tested multimedia products like CatchUp, Venue, Collab, and BARS, and we’re encouraged to see the formats continue to help people connect and build community.
At the moment Hotline does not have an iPhone app, but it is in the works. The website, available to users in the United States, is live now and allows connections via Twitter, but it does not only has a waiting list and a tool. for applying to host your own show.
