Facebook founder Mark Zuckeberg has increased his property in Hawaii by approximately 44 acres. For this he put $ 17 million on the table. There have already been several criticisms from locals.
Facebook-Founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla, added 45 acres to their Hawaii property. For this, the couple spent 17 million US dollars (around 15 million euros). That comes from a report of the “Guardian”.
The Zuckerbergs’ estate is located on the island of Kauai and has so far covered around 600 hectares. The Kaloko reservoir is also located in the newly acquired part. When the dam broke in 2006, 400 million liters of water were released, killing seven people.
The Zuckerbergs spokesman Ben LaBolt said the couple wanted to meet all legal requirements for promotion and safety. Zuckerberg plans to cultivate the land and raise cattle.
Trouble with the neighbors even earlier
There has been trouble with the neighbors in the past. After Zuckerberg erected a roughly two meter high stone wall around his property in 2016, thereby also blocking access to a public beach, the surrounding residents complained.
Zuckerberg caused renewed sensation a year later when he tried to drive out interference by filing a lawsuit. Because when he bought the property, some of the parcels were not for sale. Peculiarities of the local real estate law ensured that they remained in the possession of local families who, however, had no official title deeds. Zuckerberg tried to take legal action against it.
Locals accused Zuckerberg of neo-colonialism
Thereupon the residents started a petition and accused the Zuckerbergs of “neocolonialism”. Kapua Sproat, a law professor at the University of Hawaii, told the Guardian at the time: “For and native Hawaiians, the land is an ancestor. It is a grandparent.” Zuckerberg eventually dropped the lawsuit.
In addition to the Hawaii estate, Zuckerberg also owns 560 acres and ten houses in Palo Alto, San Francisco and on Lake Tahoe. The value of the property is according to the “Guardian” at 320 million US dollars (around 282 million euros).
