Facebook engages in the fight against climate disinformation

Facebook announced Thursday the launch of a tool to debunk untruths about climate change, taking a further step in its policy of actively combating disinformation.

The new tool is integrated into the Climate Information Center, a page launched last September by the Californian group that brings together facts and data on the climate from well-known organizations.

This section lists a series of facts related to climate change. It includes an explanation of the relationship between global warming and the decrease in the number of polar bears as well as a description of the fall in the cost of renewable energies.

Facebook says it relied on experts from George Mason University, Yale’s Climate Change Communication Program and Cambridge University.

This effort is part of a series of measures announced in recent months by the social media giant to combat deceptive and manipulative content disseminated on its platform.

Long accused of laxity and refusing to set itself up as an arbiter of the truth, Facebook has gradually changed its position. Last year, the group set up an information center on the coronavirus as well as an information center on the US elections of November 2020.

He also withdrew many misleading publications, including those disputing the outcome of the US presidential election, and suspended the accounts of some disinformation propagators, including that of former US President Donald Trump.

Facebook also announced on Thursday that it will start placing mentions under certain content in the UK to redirect users to its Climate Information Center.

Currently available in Germany, the United States, France and the United Kingdom, this platform will also be open in South Africa, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Spain, India, Indonesia, Ireland, in Mexico, Nigeria, the Netherlands and Taiwan.
