Anyone who has had a virtual reality glasses in hand has noticed that its design is, at best, bulky. But this maybe I could have my days numbered, as Facebook has designed a new model that has the appearance of normal glasses and with a much smaller size than we are used to.
Is not the first time that there is talk of the new design that Facebook has in its hands, but now Oculus – the virtual reality division of Facebook – has explained in a paper the technology you are testing in your new prototype. What e doesl new design is to combine several fines covers holographic film until a virtual reality screen somewhat thicker than that of our smartphones. Through a special laser projection and backlight system, the glasses achieve display 2D images and and 3D.
If we compare them with an Oculus Quest we see where the big difference is: the new glasses weigh 10 degrees compared to 571 grams weighing the latest model of the company, although for the moment it would have a similar resolution, with 1,200 x 1,600 pixels.
At research blog from Facebook you can see a video of the new projection system, but for now images are only shown in green. The company says that soon will have a model capable of displaying a wider color range and working to “remove visible pixels and increase resolution”.
Of course, do not expect us to see this model in stores soon. It’s still a prototype and Facebook still has other challenges ahead to solve, such as the duration of your battery or your connectivity with other devices.
