Facebook deleted more than 18 million posts for misinforming about COVID-19

Facebook inaugurated its Transparency Center, in which more information about the company’s policies, how they are developed and updated, will be known. It debuts with the company’s latest community standards report: it comes from deleting more than 18 million posts for misinforming about COVID-19.

The Transparency Center is a response to criticism for the opacity of Mark Zuckerberg’s company, after a controversial 2020, which included the suspension of the account of the then president of the United States, Donald Trump.

“We will continue to add more information and build the Transparency Center as our integrity efforts continue to evolve,” explained Guy Rosen, Facebook’s vice president of Integrity.

According to the company, Artificial Intelligence systems are working, finding and eliminating 97% of posts with hate speech before being reported by users.

In the first quarter of 2021, Facebook removed 9.8 million posts with hateful content. In the last quarter of 2020 they had eliminated 6.4 million.

Zuckerberg’s company also removed 8.8 million bullying posts, compared to 6.3 million in the final stretch of 2020.

Facebook seeks accurate and accurate news about COVID-19

Since the start of the pandemic, Facebook removed more than 18 million posts that misinformed about COVID-19, both from Facebook and Instagram.

COVID-19 continues to be a major public health problem, and we are committed to helping people obtain authoritative information, including information about vaccines,” says Rosen. In addition to eliminating false information about the disease, Facebook “is also working to increase the acceptance of vaccines and combat the vaccine misinformation ”.

Around the world, 3.42 million people have died, out of a total of 165 million cases. The United States is the country with the highest number of deaths, with 587 thousand in total, while in Latin America Brazil is at the forefront of the macabre classification, with 287 deaths out of a total of 15.8 million cases.

Fighting sexual and violent content on Facebook

The dissemination of nudity and sexual content is another of the platform’s concerns. According to the statement, in the first quarter of 2021 the prevalence of adult nudity on both Facebook and Instagram was 0.03 to 0.04%.

Meanwhile, the prevalence of violent and graphic content was 0.01-0.02% on Instagram. On Facebook, it was 0.03-0.04%, compared to 0.05% in the previous quarter.

“We are working to share more data and match the metrics we share on both Facebook and Instagram,” says Rosen. “That is why we are releasing these prevalence figures for the first time and will continue to compare them every quarter to track our progress.”

The content policy unit between Facebook and Instagram is essential in the application of these measures.

“If the content is considered a violation on Facebook, it is also considered a violation on Instagram,” explains the statement from the Center for Transparency.

“As we improve our methodologies, we measure violations in more languages or in new parts of Facebook and Instagram. In addition, we update our policies, the way we define and measure the application may change. As a result, historical comparisons can be imperfect”.
