Facebook closed all accounts that were open linked to the Burmese army, following the use by the military junta of “deadly violence” against pro-democracy protesters, the platform announced Thursday in a statement.
This decision, which takes effect immediately, applies to the military and entities controlled by the armed forces on Facebook and Instagram, and also prohibits all advertising.
“Events after the February 1 coup, including deadly violence, precipitated the need for this ban,” Facebook explained in a statement.
“We think the risks of authorizing Tatmadaw (the Burmese army, ndlr) on Facebook and Instagram are too great,” he added.
These last three weeks, the generals have not stopped intensifying the use of force to weaken the mobilization in favor of democracy in Burma, where thousands of people challenged them daily by taking to the streets.
The number of deaths since the coup rose to five on Wednesday, following the death of a 20-year-old man who died of injuries sustained in Mandalay (center).
The army used Facebook extensively to spread its allegations of electoral fraud in the November elections won by Aung San Suu Kyi’s party.
