Facebook buys Giphy: the GIF was network culture before Instagram – tech

In future, the internet company could use Giphy as if through a periscope to understand what people are looking for in private conversations for the right GIF – and how much in the apps of competitors such as Twitter, Reddit or Snapchatwho are also using Giphy is really going on. As a precaution, Facebook has already announced that it will leave the collaboration unchanged. But whether competitors and antitrust authorities want this is still completely unclear. (Wired)

Good ideas don’t go away when Marc Zuckerberg approaches

For the part of humanity equipped with smartphones, the Giphy deal means that there is probably not much left that Marc Zuckerberg could not ruin in the medium term. For years, his company, like Graf Nummer, has been pulling through the data thicket of the internet to find new additions to the eponymous core business, which in recent years has mainly been caused by unpleasant things (racism, election manipulation, “Hello $ over” requests) and stagnating user numbers were noticed.

There is still hope for the GIF. The so-called “Riepl law” already said a good hundred years ago that media that had arisen somehow always survived, even if they were marginalized. The cassette survived the CD, the newspaper will probably still be used for wallpapering in twenty years. It is therefore quite possible that our old handmade GIFs will sometime rush through the net when Khalid has long since stopped dancing on Giphy.
