Facebook blocks Mu.ZEE Ostend page because of nude photo

“We have contested this closure with Facebook but so far without result,” said Colette Castermans, spokesperson for the museum.

Lhe social network Facebook blocked the page of the Ostend maritime museum “Mu.ZEE” in mid-July because of the publication, on the account of the cultural institution, of a photo of the artist Constant Permeke posing near two nude sculptures, museum spokesperson Colette Castermans confirmed on Monday. The page is currently still blocked.

The photo was posted on July 16 to Mu.ZEE’s Facebook page. Shortly after, the post was deleted by Facebook and then the entire page was blocked. “We have contested this closure with Facebook but so far without result,” continues Colette Castermans. “It’s a disaster because a lot of our communication is done via Facebook. Our page has 16,000 members and we have invested a lot of time in it. Creating a new page is something we would rather avoid ”.

Toerisme Vlaanderen had experienced the same problem in 2018 when a promotion for the year Rubens was taken offline. Finally, after negotiation, the Flemish tourism promotion agency was authorized to place some artistic nudes advertisements. Mu.ZEE also hopes to come to an agreement with Facebook.
