Trump reacted quickly to his exile. “This is an insult to 75 million American voters. Facebook should not get away with this censorship. We will win in the end. Our country can no longer handle these abuses.”
The former president can get his account back after two years, if he meets the conditions. A team of experts must investigate whether he can be allowed back on Facebook. “If we believe he still poses a threat to public safety, we will extend the suspension,” Facebook Vice President Nick Clegg said in a statement. Should Trump get his account back, but break the guidelines again shortly after, he could be banned again.
Exceptional cases
Facebook immediately announced that new rules have been drawn up for exceptional cases, such as Trump’s suspension. From now on, politicians will no longer be protected because of their jobs. If they post misleading or hurtful messages, they will no longer be tolerated due to possible newsworthiness, but the messages will be removed.
“Given the severity of the circumstances leading to Trump’s suspension, we believe his conduct was a serious violation of our rules. That’s why we gave him the highest penalty possible under our new rules,” Clegg said.
