Among consumers who use Internet telephony, the two applications most used to make private calls and / or send messages on the Internet remain WhatsApp (83% of those who use it) and Facebook Messenger (72%), notes the Belgian Institute of Posts and Telecommunications (BIPT) in a report published Tuesday. However, both are losing ground compared to the two previous years (94% and 77%) and are losing ground against the competition, notes the telecoms regulator. More generally, the use of Internet telephony has remained stable in recent months compared to 2019 and amounted to 55.4% in 2021.
Compared to previous years, a number of trends continue, analyzes BIPT. Internet TV usage (40c% in 2021 while usage was only 35c% in 2020) and pay TV or video on demand (40c% this year vs. 32c% the last year) continues to increase, while that of fixed telephony continues to decline (46% in 2021, compared to 53% in 2020). The penetration of mobile telephony (93%), home internet (91%) and digital television (81%) also remains very high.
Consumers have encountered fewer problems with their operator this year: 60% in this case, an improvement of 5% compared to 2020. Their satisfaction with regard to tariffs is moreover stable for telephony and Fixed Internet and on the rise for mobile telephony (score: 3.3 out of 5 in 2020 and 3.5 out of 5 in 2021).
It should also be noted that consumers who are familiar with the BIPT price comparison tool find it easy to use (score: 3.4 out of 5) and that it provides relevant results (score: 3.3, out of 5). Among the respondents who have already used it, four in ten (40%) indicate that its use has led them to change their tariff plan and two thirds (35%) of operator.
