Facebook and Instagram illegal in Europe?
Information that is undoubtedly difficult to ignore is provided by City AM, a London business newspaper. He cites a report that Meta prepared for the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
It is there that there is an excerpt saying that Meta will not be able to offer “the most important products and services” in the EU unless its authorities change their mind about the regulations related to the activities of the American company. Some time ago it was also suggested by other sources, including The Guardian.
Meta has a problem with the GDPR
What are the specific activities of the most important EU bodies? For changes in the transatlantic data transfer and the so-called Privacy Shield, which was annulled by the Court of Justice of the EU in 2020. The US and the EU are still unable to come up with new, specific regulations. Meta, of course, wants user data to be stored and processed on servers in the USA. Currently, it does so by using contractual clauses as a legal basis, but there are more and more allegations that it is not in line with the GDPR regulation.
Internet without Facebook? It is possible, but still unlikely
In the aforementioned report, Meta points out that sharing data between countries and regions is crucial for the delivery of services and advertising. Thanks to the Irish Data Protection Commission, however, all the confusion will end in court and, as you can see, Meta is afraid of failure.
Americans have many services and portals in their ranks, here it is most closely related to two – Facebook and Instagram. There are probably quite a few people for whom their disappearance would be nothing important, or even a cause for joy. On the other hand, you can imagine that for many, the vision of the Internet without Facebook is a drama. Will we deal with him? Unimaginable, Meta will do whatever it takes to continue to offer its most important services to European users. After all, this is largely what he lives on.
