Facebook and Instagram will launch starting from November – to be precise as early as November 6th – a paid subscription plan to use the two platforms without advertising. After the previews of the last few days by the Wall Street Journal, the official announcement comes directly from the American company. The decision, we read in the press release, was taken “to comply with evolving European regulations”. Subscriptions will be available in countries in the European Union and the European Economic Area, as well as in Switzerland. Those who reside in these regions will have the choice between continuing to use the services with personalized advertisements for free or signing up and no longer seeing the advertisements. As long as people are subscribed, their information will not be used for ads.”
Subscriptions will cost 9.99 euros per month on the web and 12.99 euros per month on iOS and Android. Meta then specified that starting from March 1, 2024, an additional cost of 6 euros per month on the web version and 8 euros per month for mobile access will be applied to each user’s additional accounts. The announcement immediately had a positive impact on the brand’s shares, which rose 3.5% at the start of the market. Continuing the press release, Meta then wanted to specify its business philosophy: «We believe in an Internet supported by advertising, because it gives people access to personalized products and services, regardless of their economic status, and also allows small companies to reach potential customers, grow their business and create new markets, promoting the growth of the European economy”. And it continues, explaining the reasons for the decision: «Like other companies, we will continue to support the need for an Internet supported by advertising, including with our new subscription offering. But we respect the spirit and purpose of these evolving European regulations and are committed to complying with them.”
