Facebook and Instagram follow Twitter with paid verification | Tech

Parent company Meta Platforms of Facebook and Instagram will introduce paid subscriptions that allow users to verify their accounts. The company thus follows in the footsteps of Twitter, which previously introduced paid verification badges for accounts.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the paid subscriptions on Sunday. These will be offered from $ 11.99 (11.18 euros). Via iOS, Apple’s operating system, it is $ 2 more expensive to take out a subscription.

With Meta Verified, the company mainly targets influencers and other content creators. The service will be tested in Australia and New Zealand from next week.

Social media is largely dependent on advertisements for their revenue. That is why they are increasingly launching subscription formulas to diversify their income. For example, Snap already launched the Snapchat Plus subscription and Twitter introduced the paid verification badges.

It remains to be seen whether many users are willing to pay for services that were previously free.
