The city’s Health department called on New Yorkers to return to wearing ‘high-quality masks’ when in indoor public places and in groups outside due to the high levels of Covid the City is experiencing again.
The department put out a message on social media with examples of the type of masks that should be worn.
“To help slow the spread, all New Yorkers should wear a high-quality mask, such as an N95, KN95, or KF94 in all enclosed public places and around crowds outside,” the message read.

The City’s announcement comes at a time when the Centers for Disease Control (CDs, a federal government institution) has raised the Covid danger level for the five NYC boroughs to high risk.
This new level of risk has to do with the latest variant of COVID, BA.5, a descendant of Ómicron and which evidence indicates is more transmissible than previous strains, it also appears to be at least four times more resistant to vaccines, according to a new study from Columbia University, cited by nbcyneyork.com
BA.5, which accounted for more than 40% of all New York State COVID-positive samples sequenced for variants in the latest two-week data set (and 45% of all New York City samples tested , according to that health department), and BA. 4, were at least 4.2 times more vaccine evasive than its predecessor, according to research from Columbia University.
