Façade festival “Genius Loci” fails in Erfurt because of money

This year there will be no “Genius Loci” facade projection festival. As festival boss Hendrik Wendler said, the spectacle cannot be held in Erfurt. Despite months of negotiations, the city administration could not agree on the costs.

Country cuts funding

The state has reduced its funding from the last 200,000 euros to 100,000 euros. According to Wendler, the grant from the city of Erfurt was not sufficient either. In order to be able to work, at least 200,000 euros would be needed. The facade festival was to be celebrated on October 3rd – on the day of German unity – as part of a public festival. The “Thuringian General (€)” quotes Tobias Knoblich, head of the Erfurt culture department, as saying that the genius loci lacked the willingness to adapt to the framework conditions of a public festival. Erfurt had created a good financial basis, just maybe not for the very high standards and all the elements like in Weimar.

International artist participation

“Genius Loci” premiered in Weimar in 2012, back then with a projection at the Princely House. After that, an annual competition was announced in which international video mapping artists took part. The competition winners projected their designs onto a wide variety of facades, including the German National Theater, the Goethe and Schiller Archive and the Bauhaus Museum. After ten years, the organizers wanted to move to Erfurt.
